Google UX Design Certificate - Designing for Social Good

Roles

UX Research, Wireframe, Prototype, Usability Testing

Duration

1 month - Jul 2022 - Jul 2022

Overview

The third and final project in the Google UX Design certificate was all about designing for social good. Here I decided to take this opportunity to try and merge my budding interest in UX design and my background in science and health, to try and create something that would allow for local members of the community to search and access healthcare resources, in both a mobile app - and a responsive website.

Goals

The goal of the project was to build out an app that allows users to easily find and connect with local resources in their area

User Research

Our user research utilized a survey to determine the general demographic of the app. Overall it was determined that the target population is very wide and diverse - coming from a variety of different ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses. They can find navigating and connecting with healthcare resources in some areas difficulty, particularly those in rural areas. Compiling this information allowed me to create a persona based on the average user

Wireframes

I first decided to focus on designing for mobile applications and scaling up from there to a desktop environment. Due to the large market share, nobile is the form factor I would expect the vast majority of users to use this system in. The primary userflow, I imagine, would be opening up the map that allows the user to apply map layers (showing critical items like: emergency centers, hospitals, 24 hour walk-in clinics, etc), a search bar is also included to help users find other healthcare services based on search terms (pharmacies, mental health clinics, local family doctors, etc)

Results from Usability Studies

I conducted just a single round of usability studies - findings from the round of usability studies helped to guide design from wireframes to the mockup stage. Determining what pain points users experienced with the low fidelity designs and redesigning them for the mockups

Round 1 Findings

  1. Difficult to differentiate between contacts listed

  2. Users would like to edit contacts one at the time, instead of all at once

  3. Would like more features

High Fidelity Mockups

Finalized designs for the mobile app

Conclusion

Next Steps

  1. Conduct another set of usability studies to further refine the project and see if pain points were resolved

  2. Conduct more user research to see if any new features are needed
